Network marketing has afforded me and my family an incredible life of friends around the world, great homes, travel, and fine dining. But life has not always been easy. As a child with dyslexia, I was perceived as slow, dumb and stupid. I was put in special classes to have tests read to me.

When I was in high school the teachers would call on me to read out loud. I would struggle and stammer and stumble through the passage. To this day I can hear my classmates laughing and taunting me. My teachers were frustrated with me and even my parents were asking “Why can’t John read?” I wanted to know why I could not read. No matter how hard I tried the words all jumbled together. I had no self-esteem, no confidence and I just wanted to be invisible.

Amazing as it may seem I still struggle with reading to this very day. One of the exciting things about this industry is that it does not prejudge anybody regardless of education, age, race, finances or where you live. You’ll find that network marketing products are higher quality that in traditional retail. Retail is all driven by price. When you compete on price the first thing that gets sacrificed is quality. Network marketing products are results driven. When results are key, quality comes first.

What does the most famous ride in American history have to do with network marketing? We all know about Paul Revere’s ride and his message, “the British are coming”. MY INTRODUCTION TO NETWORK MARKETING

A good friend invited me to a meeting at his house. It was something to do about water filters. Because of my mechanical skills I assumed that he wanted me to check out the product or build a display. Certainly not sell. Because of my learning disability I was very, very introverted with no self-esteem and no confidence.

We had a problem on the production line, so I was several hours late for the meeting. I walked in late still wearing my work clothes, smelling like potato chips, wearing my safety goggles and yes, even my hair net. I can still see the expression of the faces of the two suits from Minneapolis. “We waited two hours for this guy?

They demonstrated a filter that turned murky water crystal clear. I was amazed. There were five of us there that night, but I was the only one who got excited and wrote a postdated check for $480. I decided then and there that no matter what, I was going to find the $5000 I needed to be a Direct Distributor.

The reception I got at home (a 12 by 72-foot Garland trailer) was not enthusiastic. We were going to be married that month and my fiancé was not happy. Everyone I knew from family to friends to co-workers at the plant, event management assumed I had lost my mind. I still remember sitting in the break room and having co-workers tell me I would fail. I remember saying “If I try and fail the worst that can happen is I have to come back and get a job like you have”. You could have heard a pin drop.

START-UP

I got my dad to co-sign a $5000 loan (reluctantly) and jumped in with both feet. Back then I thought that if I could earn $3000 a month and be in business for myself I would not know what to do with all that money. The $3000 became $5,000 and then $10,000 and it continued to grow from there.

Can what happened for me happen for you? Yes! Absolutely! I went from a blue-collar worker, in debt, making $9.00 an hour with a high school education (sort of), with a severe learning disability, no business experience, no sales experience, no self-esteem or confidence and certainly no knowledge or understanding of network marketing to having earned over $18,000,000. Yes… for sure… you can do this!

Life after achieving Network Marketing success: an incredible lake home, time to enjoy life and my family, travel around the world, friends around the globe, plus all the toys, especially my Harleys!

NETWORK MARKETING CAN CHANGE YOUR LIFE

Can what happened for me happen for you? Absolutely! People look at me now and assume it was easy but back then I had no sales experience and no business knowledge. I did not even understand recruiting. I started my career going door-to-door in winter, a few days before Christmas, selling water filters. These filters were sold using the “puppy dog approach”. We would leave the filter with someone for a week and they would not want to give it up. (At least that’s how it was supposed to work.) I placed 3 filters my first week.

I went back the following week to check on the filter and my older brother came with me for moral support. I sold one of the three I had placed which netted me a $59 profit. I looked at my by brother and said “we are going to be rich”. He wanted in and I told him “ok but we need to make a pact between us that no one else is to know about it”. I thought why would I want to create my own competition by having other people selling it? I did not understand the network marketing concept of recruiting others or the idea of leverage. All I could see back then was the idea of buying a filter for $120, selling it for $179 and putting $59 in my pocket.

After 6 months I was able to quit my maintenance job and go full time. I spent four incredible eye opening years with that company. I earned $400,000 and my life and paradigm changed forever. I learned the fundamentals but most important I learned about timing and consumable products.

Word-of-mouth

Think about the last restaurant you loved or the last movie you saw that you told someone else about and how your endorsement influenced them to see that movie or eat at the restaurant. The sheer overwhelm of being hit by advertisements from every direction has brought the market specialists back to word-of-mouth being the most effective. Nothing embraces the power of word-of-mouth quite like network marketing.

There are plenty of advertising executives who think that precisely because of the sheer ubiquity of marketing efforts these days, word-of-mouth appeals have become the only kind of persuasion that most of us respond to anymore.

DSA

(Direct Selling Association) A record 20.5 million people were involved in direct selling in the United States in 2016, a 1.5% increase from the previous year. These people are affiliated with direct selling companies, and are eligible to purchase products at a discount, and resell them at a profit. They are also eligible to sponsor others to do the same.

5.3 million are building independent businesses as direct sellers, meaning they are actively managing a customer base and possibly sponsoring others to do the same. 800,000 of these people are full-time and 4.5 million are part time. In addition, 15.2 million others receive a discount on products and services that they personally enjoy and use. Estimated direct retail sales of $35.54 billion in 2016 is the second most in direct selling history.

Timing
Every company will tell you that their timing is perfect… right now. Timing is very predictable, a factor of numbers. There is a sweet spot in every company when it transitions from small to big. That is where you want to be. Over 3000 new network marketing companies are founded every year but only a handful survive. 95% of these new companies are gone in their first year. Of the 5% that survive only 2% are in business after 5 years. Of those that make it to 5 years only one will hit significant sales of $100,000,000

According to the DSA the average company has distributor retention of 8% the first year and 5% in the second year. According to Business From Home the average Top Earner in Direct Selling is earning approximately $20,000 per month / $240,000 per year. This is based on 8,700+ rankings. Approximately 300 distributors are making $1+ million a year. I’m very grateful to have been in this category over the last 10 years.

The size of the direct selling sales force increased 5.7% to 16.8 million in 2013, a record high. The industry experienced a surge of new direct selling independent representatives at the height of the recession. Due to normal attrition and the fact that some people join the industry for the short term, the slight reduction in force was expected in 2010 and 2011. The size of the industry’s sales force grew 5.7% in 2013 and is continuing to rise.
